We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Library Assistant to join our dynamic team at the Honolulu Public Library System. As a vital part of our staff, you will play a key role in the daily operations of our branches, ensuring that our vast collection is organized, accessible, and welcoming to all patrons. You will be the first point of contact for visitors, assisting them with their research needs and ensuring they have a positive experience in our space.
Responsibilities
- Shelving and Organization: Sort, shelve, and maintain library materials using the Dewey Decimal System or Library of Congress classification.
- Patron Assistance: Help visitors locate books, access digital databases, and navigate library computers and printers effectively.
- Reference Support: Provide directional assistance and answer general inquiries regarding library hours, policies, and available services.
- Collection Management: Assist in the processing of new arrivals, including checking in, stamping, labeling, and cataloging books.
- Event Coordination: Set up meeting rooms, assist with the organization of children's storytime and community events, and manage room reservations.
- Inventory Control: Participate in periodic inventory checks to ensure the accuracy of our collection and report missing items.
- Technology Support: Troubleshoot basic computer issues and guide patrons on using library software and Wi-Fi.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent required; an Associate’s degree in Library Science or related field is preferred.
- Experience: Previous experience working in a library, school, or customer service environment is highly desirable.
- Organizational Skills: Strong ability to organize materials efficiently and maintain a tidy workspace.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with diverse community members.
- Computer Literacy: Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and comfort learning new library management software.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift boxes of books (up to 25 lbs) and stand for extended periods while shelving.
